Payal Salsburg Moderates Women’s Bar Association Program

Payal Salsburg is the moderator for an upcoming “Finding Your Voice in the Courtroom and Boardroom” program which is co-sponsored by Suffolk University Law School and the Women’s Bar Association In-House Counsel committee. The program takes place on Thursday, February 9th from 5-7pm at Suffolk Law. The panel features Honorable Denise Casper of the U.S. District Court, Honorable Debra Squires-Lee of the Superior Court as well attorneys practicing at law firms and an in house counsel. The panelists will discuss their experience in the courtroom and the boardroom as junior and senior lawyers, and talk about the methods and strategies that worked for them to become successful practitioners. Matt Kane and Payal Salsburg Reappointed by the Board of Bar Overseers as Hearing Officers

Matt Kane and Payal Salsburg have each been reappointed as hearing officers by the Board of Bar Overseers for a second three-year term. Established by the Supreme Judicial Court as an independent administrative body to investigate and evaluate complaints against attorneys, BBO hearing officers preside in panels of three over disciplinary proceedings brought against individual attorneys by the Office of Bar Counsel. In this role, Matt and Payal hear evidence, make findings of fact, and, where appropriated, provide sanctions recommendations to the Board of Bar Overseers.

Payal Salsburg is quoted in a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article, “Snap Judgements: Local Lawyers Offer Issues to Watch for in 2023” on December 30th:

In the area of business litigation, courts across the commonwealth will continue to grapple with applying the anti-SLAPP statute to dismiss claims that may be based on petitioning activity. Given the number of cases in the Superior Court and the Appeals Court in 2022 that deal with this issue, the SJC may have to again clarify the correct application of the standard first set out in Duracraft Corp. v. Holmes Prods., Corp. (1998), and subsequently augmented by 447 Harrison Ave., LLC v. JACE Boston, LLC (2019), and Blanchard v. Steward Carney Hosp., Inc. (2019).”

Laredo & Smith Lawyers Named to 2023 Best Lawyers List and Ones to Watch

Four Laredo & Smith’s partners Matt Kane, Marc Laredo, Mark Smith and Payal Salsburg are selected by their peers for inclusion in the 2023 edition of The Best Lawyers in America©. Senior Counsel Jessica Conklin is named to the Best Lawyers: One to Watch© list.

Matt Kane is selected for his work in Commercial Litigation again this year, an area he is named for annually since 2017. Matt represents banks and other financial institutions, businesses and individuals in an array of business law matters and disputes concerning consumer finance, employment, construction, real estate and general litigation as part of the firm’s business litigation practice. He also has considerable experience in consumer financial services litigation, including mortgage and title litigation, civil check fraud, and fair debt collection matters.

Marc Laredo is selected again this year for his work in both Commercial Litigation and Employment Law/Management. Marc represents clients in disputes among owners of closely held businesses and a wide array of other business litigation matters including commercial contract cases, business torts, employment and non-competition litigation, government investigations and construction cases. Additionally, Marc serves as counsel to closely held businesses, advising them on issues such as the initial formation and maintenance of the business entity, contract and employment matters, crisis situations and exit strategies.

Payal Salsburg is selected this year for her work in Commercial Litigation and Criminal Defense: White Collar. She focuses her practice in the areas of business litigation, corporate advice and counsel, and white collar criminal defense. She represents corporations, small businesses and individuals in connection with an array of matters including contract and business disputes, False Claims Act litigation, and government and internal investigations.

Mark Smith is selected again this year for his work in Criminal Defense: White Collar. He is also recognized for work in Commercial Litigation, Closely Held Companies and Family Business Law. Payal Salsburg Named to Boston Bar Association’s 2023 Beacon Awards Committee

Payal Salsburg is appointed to the steering committee of the Boston Bar Association’s 2023 Beacon Awards for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The Beacon Awards recognize individuals and organizations who are forging innovative paths toward a more diverse, equitable and inclusive profession and the greater legal community. The committee work to select honorees and also handle fundraising for the event.  The committee will select honorees for the following categories:

Empowerment Award: Awarded to a powerful advocate that works to create systemic change in the wider community by amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups and advancing civil rights, access to justice, and/or diversity, equity, & inclusion.

Voice of Change Award: Awarded to a luminary leader in the legal community who has forged a new path and has played an extensive role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the profession.

Corporate Champion: Awarded to an in-house legal department that has been a leader in internal or external projects and practices that promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive legal profession.

The 13th annual Beacon Awards for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion takes place in January 2023 at Artists for Humanity.

Payal Salsburg Co-Authors Boston Bar Journal Article on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Legal Profession

Payal Salsburg published a recent Boston Bar Journal article entitled, “Reflections on Efforts at Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Profession.”  Payal teams up to co-author the article with Darshana Indira, a fellow Board member of the South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston (SABA GB).  Payal and Darshana discuss the many ways that SABA GB encourages and furthers inclusivity in the legal profession by hosting programs and events aimed at professional networking and development, legal scholarship and education, and advocacy and community involvement. Payal Salsburg Facilitates a Women’s Day of Conversation

Payal Salsburg facilitated the Women’s Bar Association’s “Women’s Day of Conversation.” This annual event builds ally-ship among women with the goal of tearing down barriers. Using the “This Talk Isn’t Cheap” toolkit, Payal and her co-facilitator guided meaningful conversations from various racial and ethnic backgrounds about equity within the profession and workplace.
