Laredo, Smith & Kane announces that Senior Associate Darshana Indira has joined the Boston Bar Association’s (BBA) Labor and Employment Law Section.

Practitioners join the Labor & Employment Law Section to share and expand their expertise in labor and employment, labor-management relations, and employment discrimination. The Section also focuses on practices and procedures before state and federal agencies regarding labor in all cases arising from an employer-employee relationship.

As an accomplished employment and business lawyer, Indira advises company owners, organizational leaders, and C-suite executives across a broad spectrum of employment and commercial litigation matters. With a deep understanding of various industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotech, healthcare, and retail, her expertise spans both transactional and litigation work. Indira provides strategic counsel to businesses on the complexities of employer-employee relationships. She assists management and senior executives in navigating executive compensation, employment agreements, non-compete clauses, and severance negotiations.

In addition to her employment law expertise, Indira is a trusted advisor in business law. She works with startups and emerging companies in Massachusetts and other states, helping them form their entities, draft foundational documents, and establish employment agreements. Laredo, Smith & Kane’s Darshana Indira Appointed Co-Chair of Boston Bar Association Well-Being Advisory Committee

Laredo, Smith & Kane announces that Senior Associate Darshana Indira has been appointed to serve as co-chair of the Boston Bar Association’s (BBA) Well-Being Advisory Committee. Indira’s one-year appointment began in September 2024.

“The pressures of the legal profession can lead to isolation and burnout. Addressing the issues head-on is key to establishing a healthy balance that allows lawyers to thrive personally and professionally,” said Indira. “I’m proud to serve the members of the BBA and the Commonwealth as we work together to foster a culture of well-being across all aspects of the legal industry.”

The mission of the BBA is to advance the highest standards of excellence for the legal profession, facilitate access to justice, foster a diverse and inclusive professional community, and serve the community at large. The well-being of the Commonwealth’s lawyers is critical to meeting the aims of this mission. As a catalyst for change, the Well-Being Advisory Committee supports the well-being of lawyers through member programs and events.

Darshana Indira Quoted in Mass Lawyers Weekly Article Covering SJC Ruling

Darshana Indira was quoted in a recent Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article entitled, “Bar Sees Balance in SJC’s Ruling in 7-Eleven Case” where she commented on how the case compares the franchisor-franchisee relationship to that of an employer-employee one.

An employment lawyer, Darshana told Mass Lawyers weekly:  “Boston employment and business lawyer Darshana Indira said she had been surprised to learn that the Patel case was heading back to the SJC, calling it a “stretch” on the facts of the case to construe the franchisor-franchisee relationship as an employer-employee relationship. Other models live more clearly in the “gray area.” Every time the SJC speaks on an issue like this, the court helpfully resolves lingering ambiguity around the independent contractor statute, she added. “It definitely informs our decisions on how we draft contracts, how we are going to treat employees, [and] how we treat our consultants,” Indira said.

Darshana Indira Moderates BBA Panel on Balancing Personal Health with a Law Practice

Darshana Indira is moderating a May 7, 2024 panel discussion at the Boston Bar Association entitled, “Balancing Acts: Personal Health and Parenthood in Practice.”

In this program, four accomplished attorneys will share personal journeys and strategies for balancing demanding legal careers amidst significant life challenges. Panelists will discuss managing their professional responsibilities while overcoming personal health obstacles, in addition to sharing candid reflections on their journeys through family planning, providing invaluable insights, and how to maintain personal health and parenthood with their legal careers.

Darshana Indira Presents at University of Massachusetts Law Program

Darshana Indira was a panelist for an April 2024 University of Massachusetts Law program entitled, “Bias, Barriers, and Belonging: An Evening With Attorneys in Practice.” The panel discussion covered bias in practice, navigating barriers in the profession, creating space to diversify the profession, and why DEI is imperative for all law schools.

Darshana Indira Speaks About Lawyer Wellbeing at UMass Dartmouth Law School

Darshana Indira was a featured speaker at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Law School’s Field Placement Seminar on January 30, 2024. UMass Dartmouth law Professor Rontear Pendleton welcomed Darshana back to speak about lawyer wellbeing. She shared her thoughts, experiences, and advice with students as they explore practicing law in various settings. The goal of the class is to foster a smooth transition from the law school environment into the professional workplace.

Darshana Indira presented as a panelist for the recent “Practicing with Professionalism” program through the Boston Bar Association. This programming is provided for new attorneys in Massachusetts. Darshana and her panelists hail from different practice areas, practice settings and experiences. They shared important information about the attributes of reputable attorneys and also addressed how to respond to the pressure of practicing law.  The program covered building reputations, managing relationships, connecting within the legal community, and maintaining personal well-being.
