Five Laredo & Smith Attorneys Named to Super Lawyers

Laredo & Smith is pleased to announce that five of the firm’s attorneys were named Super Lawyers in 2017! Marc Laredo, Mark Smith, Matt Kane, Eric Sigman and Payal Salsburg have all been named to the 2017  Super Lawyers list. They were named in the following categories:

Super Lawyers is a rating service for lawyers from more than 70 practice areas. To be included in the list, attorneys must attain a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. Rising Stars are selected using the same criteria as Super Lawyers, but each attorney must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less. This recognition is awarded to no more than 5% of lawyers in the state.

Laredo & Smith Attorneys Speak on Professionalism

Jessica Conklin and Payal Salsburg presented as panelists for a recent Boston Bar Association program entitled, “Practicing with Professionalism”. They discussed important attributes of reputable attorneys as well as how to respond to the pressures of practice that challenge even the most reputable attorneys. This program took place at the BBA’s offices located at 16 Beacon Street in Boston.

Kane and Conklin Present as Panelists for Boston Bar Association

Laredo & Smith attorneys, Matthew Kane and Jessica Conklin, present as panelists for the upcoming Boston Bar Association program entitled, “Taking and Defending Depositions 202.” The event takes place on November 8, 2017 from 12:30-1:30pm at 16 Beacon Street in Boston.

The panel will discuss practical skills for attorneys. The panel will cover the following topics for taking depositions:

  • Purpose driven depositions
  • Using exhibits: when, why, and how
  • Critical listening
  • Staying on track with your strategy
  • Suspending v closing a deposition
  • Effective use of court reporter

The panel will also discuss defending depositions, covering the following topics:

  • Stipulations
  • Properly using objections/ raising privilege issues
  • Controlling the deponent
  • Use of caucus/ breaks
  • Handling difficult opposition counsel

Eric Sigman Presents “Contract Review, Negotiation & Analysis” Program

Eric Sigman is serving as faculty for the MCLE program entitled, “Contract Review, Negotiation  & Analysis.” Eric is part of a 3-person panel focusing on best practices for business contract review and negotiation. The program takes place on November 7th from 2-5pm at MCLE’s offices at 10 Winter Place in Boston. There is also a live and archived webcast of the presentation.

Mark Smith Named Boston Bar Association President As College Friend Named Chairman of BBO

We are pleased to see our colleague Mark Smith named President of the Boston Bar Association. What is also incredible, is that his college friend is simultaneously being named Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers. Matthew Kane Named to Best Lawyers in America

Salsburg Speaks on Boston Bar’s Annual Professionalism Program

On August 10th, Payal Salsburg will present as a panelist for the annual Boston Bar Association’s “Practicing with Professionalism” seminar. She will discuss the common attributes of reputable attorneys. She will also cover how to respond to the pressures of practice that challenge even the most reputable attorneys.  This program takes place at the BBA’s offices located at 16 Beacon Street in Boston from 8:30am-5:30pm.

Laredo & Smith Attorneys Support BBA’s Law Day in the Schools Program

Jessica Conklin and Payal Salsburg co-taught second graders about the law through the Boston Bar Association’s 2017 Law Day in the Schools Program. The students, from Lee Academy in Dorchester, were very attentive and asked fantastic questions about how the legal process works.

Jessica Conklin spoke on an alumni panel at Boston University Academy. She discussed how BU Academy helped her succeed in her career path in law, including lessons learned from her time at the academy.

Payal Salsburg Teaches BBA Program, “Practicing with Professionalism” to New Lawyers

Payal Salsburg presented at a recent Boston Bar Association program entitled, “Practicing with Professionalism.” Payal co-taught the ethics portion of this all-day program, which covers a range of topics related to professionalism as a lawyer. Her co-presenter was Martin Newhouse, President and Acting General Counsel of the New England Legal Foundation.

The Supreme Judicial Court requires all new lawyers admitted to the Massachusetts bar to take a one-day, in-person course on professionalism. In the ethics section of this day-long class, Payal and Martin used hypothetical scenarios to engage the audience and highlight some of the more common ethical pitfalls when it comes to practicing law in the Commonwealth.
