Marc Laredo Presents to Northeastern University Entrepreneurship Class

Marc Laredo spoke to an undergraduate class on Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University in a program entitled, “Why Every Business Needs a Lawyer: What Your Lawyer Can Do For You.” In his discussion, Marc shared tips on how to select a lawyer who is a good match for entrepreneurs and their businesses. Marc also covered common issues that require businesses to engage a lawyer at the time of formation and as the business grows.

Marc Laredo & Mark Smith Named to New England Edition of Super Lawyers

Marc Laredo and Mark Smith have been named to the New England edition of the 2016 Super Lawyers listing again this year. Marc is recognized in the area of business litigation and Mark Smith has been recognized for his work with white collar crime. Both attorneys are long-standing Super Lawyers for New England and Massachusetts.

Laredo & Smith is pleased to announce that Marc Laredo, Mark Smith and Matthew Kane have been named to the 2016 Massachusetts Super Lawyers.  Marc Laredo was named to the Business Litigation list, Mark Smith has been recognized for his work in the White Collar Crime category and Matt Kane was honored as a Rising Star in Business Litigation.

Super Lawyers is a rating service for lawyers from more than 70 practice areas. To be included in the list, attorneys must attain a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. Rising Stars are selected using the same criteria as Super Lawyers, but each attorney must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less. This recognition is awarded to no more than 5% of lawyers in the state.

Marc Laredo Chairs Program on Privilege

Marc Laredo served as the program chair for the recent Mass Bar Association CLE program entitled, It’s Confidential– Privilege Law in Massachusetts”.  The program focused on a variety of privileges, including the attorney-client, spousal, parent-child, peer review, doctor-patient, common interest and joint defense privileges.  The panel explained the concept of each privilege, providing practical tips for successfully asserting and defeating privilege claims.

Matthew Kane Authors Mass Lawyers Weekly Opinion Article on Uber and Lyft

Matthew Kane authored an article for the September 19th edition of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly entitled, “For Uber and Lyft, a Set of Rules to Call Their Own.” The article discusses a new law in Massachusetts to regulate transportation network companies. Matthew Kane Speaks at BBA Practical Skills Program

Matthew Kane presents as a speaker for the Boston Bar Association’s Practical Skills Committee.  Matt’s program is entitled, “Getting Started: Drafting and Filing a Complaint in Massachusetts Courts or Administrative Agencies.”  He is joined by co-presenter, Page Wilkins.  They will cover complaint drafting basics, selection of the forum, venue requirements, and service of process issues.  Attendees will learn a range of roles in the different Courts in the Commonwealth and get a foundation of the pre-trial litigation process.  This program takes place on September 21st from 12-1pm at the Boston Bar Association’s Beacon Street office.

Mark Smith Elected President-Elect of The Boston Bar Association Council

Boston, MA, July 24, 2016 – Mark Smith, an attorney who focuses his practice in white-collar criminal defense and government investigations at Laredo & Smith, has been elected to serve as the President-Elect of the BBA Council. The Council is the BBA’s governing body and as a member, Mark will act as a representative of the Association. He will help the organization further its’ mission to provide tools, relationships and opportunities to develop successful careers and practices for its members. Mark will serve a one-year term, which begins on September 1st.

Mark’s role as the Vice President of the Council furthers his long-time support of the BBA. He is the past Chair of the Education Committee in addition to being a member of the Executive Committee. He has also served as Secretary of the BBA Council, Co-Chair of the BBA’s Criminal Law Section, and as a member of the Law Day Steering Committee and the BBA’s Committee on Rule 3:16: Practicing with Professionalism Course for New Lawyers.

Mark is a partner at Laredo & Smith, LLP where he focuses on white-collar criminal defense and government investigations. Prior to entering private practice, Mark served for eleven years as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office including as Chief of the Public Integrity Division and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau. Mark began his legal career in New York City, where he worked as a public defender for four years. He also clerked for the New York State Supreme Court. Mark is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and Suffolk University Law School.

Jessica Conklin Launches Boston Associates’ Networking Group Website

Jessica L. Conklin, co-founder of the Boston Associates’ Networking Group (BANG), is proud to announce the launch of the group’s new website, www.bang-law.com. Jessica and fellow co-founder Hannah T. Joseph of Beck Reed Riden launched the site on March 8, 2016.

The dynamic pair of lawyers launched BANG with the goal of bringing together associates from different small- and medium-sized firms, as well as in-house legal departments. The organization offers an environment for junior attorneys to support one another while exploring opportunities for professional, personal and business development.  They meet regularly to discuss a variety of issues that face young lawyers as they establish their practices.

Started in the end of 2015, BANG has grown to include members from more than 20 firms and companies in the Greater Boston Area.
