Marc Laredo Presents as Panelist: Challenges in Representing Closely-Held Businesses

Marc Laredo presents as a panelist on the Boston Bar Association’s CLE program entitled, “Small Businesses, Big Headaches: Ethical and Practical Challenges in Representing Closely-Held Businesses.” Marc joins fellow distinguished litigators and transactional lawyers to address the special ethical and practical challenges facing attorneys who practices involve closely-held businesses. Topics include:

  • Impact of recent case law, including the WilmerHale, Cesari McKenna and Abrano decisions;
  • Identifying the clients and fiduciary duties owed to them;
  • Engagement letters: forming and terminating the attorney-client relationship;
  • Hot Potato withdrawals of representation;
  • Navigating conflicts among principals, including litigation and alternative dispute resolution; and
  • Representation of stakeholders in unrelated matters – potential future conflicts.

Five Laredo & Smith Attorneys Named to Super Lawyers

Laredo & Smith is pleased to announce that five of the firm’s attorneys were named Super Lawyers in 2017! Marc Laredo, Mark Smith, Matt Kane, Eric Sigman and Payal Salsburg have all been named to the 2017  Super Lawyers list. They were named in the following categories:

Super Lawyers is a rating service for lawyers from more than 70 practice areas. To be included in the list, attorneys must attain a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. Rising Stars are selected using the same criteria as Super Lawyers, but each attorney must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less. This recognition is awarded to no more than 5% of lawyers in the state.

Marc Laredo Chairs CLE Program on Disputes in Closely-Held Service Businesses

Marc Laredo served as the program chair for a recent CLE at the Massachusetts Bar Association on January 25, 2017.  The CLE was titled, “Disputes Among the Owners of Closely Held-Service Businesses.”  It covered how disputes among the owners of closely-held service businesses threaten the daily operations and future viability of professional service firms.  The distinguished panel discussed the duties of owners to each other and the entity, as well as the accounting perspective both for planning and breaking up service businesses. Finally, the panel discussed remedies for resolving disputes when they do arise, with a particular focus on the benefits of mediation.

Marc Laredo Chairs Mass Bar Association Program for Closely Held Businesses

Marc Laredo is the program chair for a January 25th Massachusetts Bar Association CLE program entitled, “Disputes Among the Owners of Closely Held Service Businesses.” In this program, a panel will discuss the threats of business disputes, especially amongst the owners of law firms, medical practices and other professional services present special challenges. This program provides:

  • a general overview of the duties that owners of closely held services businesses owe to one another and the entity, as well as the issues that, if dealt with up front, can avoid costly problems in the future.
  • an explanation of the most common disputes arising among owners.
  • an accounting perspective for both the planning and break-up stages.
  • a discussion of remedies for resolving disputes, with a particular focus on the benefits of mediation.

In addition to Marc, the esteemed faculty includes established professionals from the legal and accounting fields. The program, which is sponsored by the business law, civil litigation and dispute resolution sections, takes place on from 4-7pm in the MBA’s conference room 101 at 20 West Street in Boston.

Marc Laredo Presents to Northeastern University Entrepreneurship Class

Marc Laredo spoke to an undergraduate class on Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University in a program entitled, “Why Every Business Needs a Lawyer: What Your Lawyer Can Do For You.” In his discussion, Marc shared tips on how to select a lawyer who is a good match for entrepreneurs and their businesses. Marc also covered common issues that require businesses to engage a lawyer at the time of formation and as the business grows.

Marc Laredo served as the program chair for the recent Mass Bar Association CLE program entitled, “It’s Confidential– Privilege Law in Massachusetts”.  The program focused on a variety of privileges, including the attorney-client, spousal, parent-child, peer review, doctor-patient, common interest and joint defense privileges.  The panel explained the concept of each privilege, providing practical tips for successfully asserting and defeating privilege claims.
